Background of the Study
Financial transparency is crucial for ensuring that businesses are accountable to their stakeholders, particularly investors. In the context of stock exchanges, financial transparency refers to the extent to which companies disclose accurate and reliable financial information, enabling investors to make informed decisions. In recent years, the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) has faced challenges concerning transparency, regulatory compliance, and investor trust (Olawale & Adeola, 2023).
Investor confidence plays a critical role in determining the stability and growth of capital markets. Transparent financial practices enhance investor trust, which, in turn, positively influences market performance and liquidity (Eze & Salisu, 2023). In Kaduna State, while the NSE is active, concerns regarding financial transparency, such as accounting irregularities and delayed financial reporting, may impact investor confidence and participation in the market.
This study aims to assess the relationship between financial transparency and investor confidence in the Nigerian Stock Exchange, specifically within the Kaduna State region, by evaluating transparency levels, investor perceptions, and market performance.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to improve financial transparency and reporting standards in the Nigerian Stock Exchange, there remain concerns about the accuracy and timeliness of financial disclosures by listed companies. This lack of transparency negatively affects investor confidence, which may lead to reduced participation in the market, lower investments, and slower economic growth (Obi & Yusuf, 2023).
Although prior studies have explored the broader impact of transparency on investor behavior, little research has been conducted specifically on the NSE in Kaduna State. Understanding how financial transparency affects investor confidence in this region will provide valuable insights for both regulatory bodies and market participants.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of financial transparency in the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Kaduna State.
2. To evaluate the impact of financial transparency on investor confidence in the market.
3. To identify the challenges affecting financial transparency and investor confidence in the NSE.
Research Questions
1. How transparent are the financial disclosures made by companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in Kaduna State?
2. What is the impact of financial transparency on investor confidence in the NSE?
3. What challenges hinder the enhancement of financial transparency and investor confidence in the NSE?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant positive relationship between financial transparency and investor confidence.
2. Inadequate financial transparency reduces investor confidence in the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
3. Regulatory challenges hinder the improvement of financial transparency in the NSE.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in Kaduna State, evaluating financial transparency and its influence on investor confidence. Limitations include challenges in accessing detailed financial reports and investor sentiment data, as well as the dynamic nature of market trends that may change over time.
